You've gotta love these studies. I know John Schnelle and Sandra Simmons (I'm guessing they were the authors of the study; I didn't actually bother to look), I don't think either one has actually ever worked in a nursing home, and I was once caught up in the middle (literally) of a very highly charged verbal escapade between Dr. Schnelle and another professor who disagreed with the validity of the results of another one of his brilliant (ha) studies. This particular study mentioned here was actually one of the more meaningful ones that has been done recently at Vanderbilt. One research project (from Jin Han in the geriatric ER) was recently done that proved that the more risk factors you have for a disease, the more likely you are to have that disease (who would have thought!), and another one (by Diann Grammn of the Nashville Alzheimer's Association) came to the conclusion that "something should be done about Alzheimer's disease", although exactly what that something should be wasn't part of the study. Perhaps someone should get a grant to do a study to determine if CNAs are a more reliable indicator of reality than research studies are.

I am kind of on the fence when it comes to the subject of being represented by a labor union. I don't relish the thought of my union dues being spent on political campaigns or lobbying expenses.

My sister-in-law's nursing home voted to be represented by a union. It's been four years now and no positive benefits have resulted. She told me that if she had to go back and do it over again, she would have not voted for it. She also says that the dues are really hurting her financially.

Wow, this story is shocking. However, I recall working with a male CNA who did similar things. When I brought it to the attention of the DON, nothing happened. It was extremely frustrating. He was well liked by his actions on the outside and fooled the management. They did not believe the accusation! He was later fired for lateness.

I also agree that abuse from someone is not because of youth. It all depends on the person's value system, no matter what stage in life he or she is in.

I have a problem with groups who claim to pull all interested parties, and all who have a stake in an issue, together to solve the problem or issue.

PHI is not doing this. They are promoting the view of the Democrats only, just as the unions do. Go to SEIU and see it everywhere: Obama, Obama.

I expect that up next at PHI.
Political action is good. Activism is a huge part of democracy- even though the US is not a democracy it's a Republic. Similar styles of government though and both allow people to be active.

I say: Check the platforms and read the candidates own web sites for details. I think we'll all find that both lack anything substantial and meaningful. Because there isn't anything there that would make any of us jump for joy...

And vote. Vote on your beliefs and values and what's important to you. For most people health care is an important issue these days. Long tern care of elderly however, is not. Patti is right when she says no one has any interest.

So long as aides will accept jobs at low wages thats what employers will pay when i got into it i decided right up front that i wouldnt accept a job that paid under 10/hr i however did cave and accepted 9.43 as my starting wage and 5 years later am up to 11.20 which is excellent pay in most places but here in upstate ny its so expensive to live its marginal pay and as much as i like being a cna im pushing myself into lpn school for financial reasons

I took part in it. And wondered when we would hear back.

NOW as said, what will come of it? I suspect it costs a lot of money to do and hope that money isn't wasted. But in a sense we all know it will be! Nothing will change.

LOL Steve you said it!

And it's really too bad. Evals COULD be an excellent tool, a way for management to actually MANAGE it's staff in a proactive positive way.

Instead I get the feeling it's just one more thing on their overly heavy plate of things that take them away from...eating their lunches and going online to book flights and what not.

Really.
