The off shifts, when management isn't around are when we're most apt to see these things happen. And I'm not at all sorry to say- the aides who do these things are DUMB. They really are. Very few excuses cut it for me. Time? No. Lack of help? no...go out and demand it or get the nurse to either help, or get you help. Ring the bell. Yell. Scream. Kick up a fuss. But don't do the lifts yourself or take on really heavy people.

One back. Ruin it and you ruin much of your life. It's not worth it.

At my work it's LIFT FREE. Which means no residents are ever lifted by staff.

You're right though Heather: There are groups of aides who ban together and buck the policy. They do lift and will not use the hoyer machine. I'm really surprised they haven't been caught too- it's not like the nurses don't know about the lifting. I guess they chose to look the other way. This happens on 2nd shift- the whole shift refuses to lift. We've left the Hoyer in a certain place, with it set up in a way where we would know if it had been even moved, never mind used...when day shift comes to work the Hoyer is just as we left it.

The few times I've worked 3-11 I do get crap when I need help with the Hoyer too. There is one aide who will assist though.

The policy states aides will be terminated if they don't follow the lift rules. They can't fire an entire shift though, I suppose.

Great advice Heather.

I have seen all this too- and it isn't good. In fact it's gotten much worse over the past few years...something is sorely lacking in the way nursing homes are managed. I have yet to put my finger on it...
