More about nursing homes/assisted living facilities hiring and then firing or HIDING staff who have criminal backgrounds.

NEW PORT RICHEY - A man applied for a job at a home for the elderly. He had pleaded no contest to a violent felony; he was hired nonetheless. One morning last week, police say, he lunged at an 78-year-old Alzheimer’s patient and punched him in the face.

The man went to jail, but he was not the only person with a criminal record on the New Port Inn’s payroll. At least two other caregivers also had records. And before state investigators arrived Tuesday to survey the facility, those caregivers were swept out of view.

Brings back memories of a CNA I worked with in LTC, who didn’t like working with me because I didn’t do things her way, like faking an entire hallway of vital signs to save time. Yep, that’s what she did. for several years. 8O
The real kicker was when she was in the feeder room at supper time one night, she was holding the resident’s head with one arm in a near choke-hold position and pouring a carton of milk down her throat. The resident was making these horrible gargling distress noises. She was fired the next day. She resurfaced as a sitter from an agency. I always wondered whether her name made it on the abuse registry. It should have. In addition, if she felt that certain patients were on the call light two much, she would take it out of their hands and shout at them. Unreal. So glad to get out of there.

      cheers,

Xtech, I really want you to start posting here- not just in comments but actually writing POSTS! Think about it…we need to hear the stories of your experience!

Thank you for the note. I will try to get in here more often and come up with some real posts. I am on a 30 day countdown to a comprehensive grad school exam that is going to be murderous, so I will get in here when I can. Thanks for the nudge :D

      peace always,

Well, actually, that’s not the whole story. I have a long-term relationship that may be coming to an end, i was nearly assaulted by a mentally ill man on the street a few weeks ago (girlfriend not sympathetic). I don’t know what to say. I blew a couple of quizzes, and I am just emotionally ready to crash. I did not know where else to put this Patti. You are doing a great job on this site, and I hope to post more soon. I will try to educate myself on how to post stories and thread-starters when all of this blows over. I am pretty much a mess. Say a little prayer for me.

      peace always,
