WHOA.
A Richton Park nursing home has been fined $25,000 for allowing a resident to fall from a fourth-floor window last spring. The 52-year-old man came to Glenshire Nursing and Rehab Centre on the afternoon of April 26. Not long after midnight he found his way to an unscreened window in a storage room and plummeted to a grate below, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.
Glenshire’s administrator did not return a call seeking comment. The facility has asked for a hearing.
Glenshire, 22660 S. Cicero Ave., reported to the Illinois Department of Public Health only that a resident had experienced an unwitnessed fall and broke a leg, according to a report on the investigation released Tuesday.
In fact, he suffered several broken bones — leg, shoulder, six ribs — and other injuries, requiring 13 days in the hospital.
The investigators note that the nursing home failed to document any details of what happened, such as the patient’s vital signs and mental status after the fall or even what time he was found.
The resident was admitted with “altered mental status” and a history of alcohol abuse. According to employees interviewed during the investigation, he went through a fire door into an area normally off-limits.
As the alarm blared, only one nurse’s aide went after him, and she had to go for help when he became combative, she told investigators.
By the time she returned with help, though, he was gone.
He was later found outside below the window. The fire department report noted: “Unknown how long patient had been outside. Patient cold to touch.”
I’m speechless.
