The owner of a closed nursing home has filed Chapter 11- and because the residents had to be re-located, other homes are strained.
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (AP) — The owner of a Northern Kentucky nursing home that closed after it lost federal funding last spring has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.Doris Abisellan, who owns the license for the Lakeside Heights Nursing Center in Highland Heights, wants protection from creditors.
Abisellan closed Lakeside when federal health officials pulled Medicare and Medicaid funding for the center after allegations of mismanagement and abuse.
She is currently facing federal theft charges stemming from accounting problems at the center.
Northern Kentucky health officials worry the bankruptcy filing could delay attempts to sell the center to another party.
The officials say Lakeside’s closing put a strain on other permanent care facilities in the area.
Lakeside had 140 patients when it closed.
Though they have been moved to other facilities, officials now say there aren’t enough beds to go around.
Another take on this:
The owner of Lakeside Heights Nursing Center has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Florida, stalling any state decision on the fate of the closed nursing home’s license and the 286 nursing home beds that the license controls. The bankruptcy is compounding an already critical situation in Campbell County stemming from Lakeside’s closing this spring, say local health experts.
“This is a crisis, and it’s only going to get worse,” said Pat Dressman, human services director for Campbell County. “Both hospitals are backed up. Families can’t find nursing homes.”
State regulators had been trying to work out an agreement so the license for the Highland Heights nursing home could be sold to a new nursing home operator, said Beth Crace, spokeswoman for the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, which regulates nursing homes.
The bankruptcy puts that on hold.
