  • Why we do this

Posted by Patti on June 28th, 2006 / Print This Post

We hear alot about the negative parts of the work we do- CNA’s.

But what about the positives? What is it that keeps us coming back everyday to endure this line of work?
Is it the patients, residents. clients?
    Is it our co-workers?

We know it’s not the pay! And for the most part, we know it’s not for the bosses.
    So what keeps us here??

For me its the residents. I feel more comfortable knowing that I am there because lets face it not every CNA is as committed as most of us are. For the simple fact that we come to this web site that we care enough to want to learn more to treat our residents better. I want to tell all the CNA’s that come to this site you are the ones that the residents love to see, the ones they miss when you are gone, and the one the family’s love to talk to because you genuinely care. I say all you men and women who love being a CNA should pat themself’s on the back!!!

I agree with you about it being the patients/residents because they are the reason most of us are in healthcare. I have spent years in the healthcare environment, both longterm care and acute care. Please do not generaloize when you say “…we know it’s not the bosses” because I have always worked within environments where bosses are supportative and genuine in doing their jobs. Since starting out in healthcare I have become one of those “bosses” and find offence in a generalized statement. But again, residents and patients ARE the reason we keep coming back and doing our jobs, not to mention the pay check is helpful too. I don’t knnow of any people out there doing CNA or Housekeeping jobs FOR the residents or patients either. Just some thoughts to ponder when you are ready to generalize again. I realize CNA’s have a very tough job that pays little but lets remember that not all CNA’s are dedicated as well; I have worked with both and you can readily pick out the dedicated from the pay check to pay check CNA. Thanks for listening.

I keep coming back because of the residents I always love to hear that someone has gotten better they can walk again feed themselves again or do what ever, it a good feeling to know I played a part n that

Jim, how do you pick out the dedicated from the paycheck? I have seen dedicated staff fired for a simple mistake and paychecks kiss a** and never show up for shifts, but they still get raises and have no fear of getting canned. I think an in house committee of your best aides ( voted in by fellow aides) should have a say in who is is dedicated and who is a paycheck.
