  • Supply Shortages

Posted by Patti on April 13th, 2006 / Print This Post

I hear, often, about supply shortages in nursing homes. Seems this is becoming more and more common.

    QUESTION:
Does your facility provide enough supplies- soaps, shampoos, briefs, wipes, deodorants, razors ect?

What happens when your facility runs out- say- in the middle of the order cycle?

Have you complained about this? If so, what were you told??

At one time basically i was told to improvise. I started bringing my own soap.

    2. stephanie Says:

We get supplies on Mondays and by Friday we are out of depends, soap, peri wash and non latex gloves. We borrow from other facilities in the area and often times bring our own gloves! When we are out of peri wash we use soap and water to clean residents. It gets me so mad when we run out of the essentials!

    3. Patti Says:

Borrow from other facilities in the area?? How BAD is that?
I hadn’t heard that one before. This isn’t right. Surely they can figure out how many cases of these things they need to order.

    4. stephanie Says:

Patti, you would think huh? This issue is huge in my facility. We tell our supervisor, the orderer, what we need, what we don’t need and she always says “oh maybe I should glance in the supply room each week before I order.” YA THINK???

    5. Julie Says:

Unbelivable, remember me when I was getting in clinical in my country classified as thrid world. There they really don’t have some supplies but in this rich country. It is not acceptable.

    6. Alicia Says:

At my facility we hardly ever run out of things, and if we do it is due to come in the next morning. But we always get through it, we also as a group bring in things for the residents for there baths it may just be dollar store liquid soaps and perfumes but it helps to add to dignity. One of my residents loves the “smell good lotion” and it only cost me $1 at Wal-mart. sounds like a good deal huh.

    7. Renee Says:

We are always running out of supplies, epsecially on the weekend. Most of us bring our own supplies - gloves, peri wash, pudding, applesauce, diapers, incontinent cream, etc. We tell our supervisors all the time - the DON and the Administrator know. THere are times we even put our money together to get loaves of bread or ground meat for meals.
