Another CNA has been charged with abuse…this time out in MICHIGAN. They are making a very big deal about this as they should…It appears to me that this is just the beginning of a widespread investigation into the lack of criminal background checks for nursing home employees.
LANSING, Mich., June 21 /PRNewswire/ — Attorney General Mike Cox announced today the arrest of a Certified Nurse’s Aide, or CNA, for physical abuse against an 85-year-old wheelchair-bound Muskegon nursing home resident.
“Michigan’s most vulnerable citizens deserve the highest standard of care and anyone who violates that standard will be prosecuted,” said Cox. “This case highlights the need for the Legislature to pass the criminal background check bills being introduced today to prevent this kind of risk to nursing home residents in the future.”Laticia Schevette Brown, 30, of Muskegon, was arrested by Attorney General investigators on Tuesday. She was arraigned before Judge Wierengo in Muskegon’s 60 Judicial District Court on one count of Patient Abuse, which carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and $10,000 in fines. Brown, who was released on a $1,000 personal bond, will be back in court July 26 at 8:30 a.m. for a preliminary examination.

I believe that everyone is innocent until proven guilty, and this case should be no exception. Besides, how about false accusations in the healthcare field? Not all nursing home residents are “vulnerable” despite being wheelchair bound. Some of them are very well capable of abusing their caregivers and making up stories. Everybody wants to believe their stories in fear of a lawsuit, and to sound politically correct. Does that sound familiar?

I agree with you Anna. A lot of these headlines are senSAtional in nature and the editors of newspapers have no clue about the actual issue at hand. I try to find articles about all the different levels of nursing home staff, who might be involved with abuse stuff.

I agree that better background check are nedded before hire of a cna.I have worked as a cna a for 10 years and it is very degrating to have the same job as someone that(I don’t know how else to say this}only has the mental capacity to be bagging groceries.I care alot for my job,but there are people out there that does not.
